Amazon recently announced that Textract, it’s AI-powered service capable of automatically extracting text and data from scanned documents, is now HIPAA-eligible, joining a growing list of AI healthcare tools from the e-commerce giant now available for use in medical care.

Possible use cases for Textract in healthcare include rapidly skimming through an insurance claim to search for patient information or pulling out important fields from an EHR, freeing up human healthcare workers to spend more time with patients and addressing other, more complex issues.

At a moment when physicians are plagued by high rates of burnout, providers are hungry for digital tools capable of alleviating their administrative burden — a key contributor to doctor fatigue. The news also comes as Amazon is experiencing a burst of success, with partners flocking to develop health-related skills for the company’s Alexa voice assistant platform after it earned HIPAA compliance earlier this year.

The fact that Textract will be available alongside the company’s other Amazon Web Services (AWS) products should only help to boost its adoption rates in healthcare: AWS is projected to account for nearly 50% of the global cloud computing market by the end of 2019.
